How to Survive a Kitchen Remodel While Living at Home

Most homeowners stay in the house during a kitchen remodel, and it is very doable with a little setup. The key is a temporary kitchen in another room, a plan for dust control, and realistic expectations for the 8 to 12 weeks the main kitchen is out of service. With those in place, daily life keeps running and the project feels far less disruptive.

Here is exactly how to set up, what to expect week to week, and how a good crew keeps your home livable. For the full schedule, see how long a kitchen remodel takes.

Can you live at home during a kitchen remodel?

Yes, and most people do. In our experience roughly 60 percent of clients stay home through the whole project, while others step out for the busiest cabinet and finish weeks. Staying is mostly about a working temporary kitchen and a crew that protects the rest of the house. If your remodel does not move major plumbing for the whole house, living in place is usually comfortable.

How do you set up a temporary kitchen?

Recreate the basics in another room, ideally near a water source. A workable temporary kitchen usually includes:

  • A microwave and a countertop induction burner or hot plate for cooking
  • A coffee maker and a kettle
  • The refrigerator relocated to a garage, dining room, or hallway
  • A folding table for prep and a few stacking bins for pantry items
  • A nearby sink, such as a bathroom or laundry sink, for quick washing
  • Paper plates and disposables to cut down on dishwashing

Set this up before demo day so you are never caught without a way to make meals.

How do you keep dust out of the rest of the house?

Dust control comes down to containment and daily habits. A good crew seals the work area with plastic dust barriers and zip walls, covers floors and pathways, and runs air filtration. On your side, keep doors to the work zone closed, change HVAC filters more often during the project, and consider closing vents in the work area so dust does not travel through the ducts.

This is part of how we work, with daily site cleanup and tarped pathways built into our process, so the rest of your home stays livable.

What should you expect week to week?

Expect the most disruption during demo and the finish weeks. Demo is loud and dusty but short. The rough in weeks, when plumbing and electrical happen, are quieter. Cabinet and countertop installation is the stretch when the kitchen is fully out of use. Finishes bring it back together. Throughout, plan simple meals, lean on your temporary kitchen, and keep a sense of humor about eating off paper plates for a couple of months.

How can you make the remodel easier on your family?

A few habits go a long way. Plan more no cook and one pot meals, stock easy breakfasts, and keep a small cooler for drinks so you are not opening the relocated fridge constantly. If you work from home, set up away from the work zone for the noisy weeks. And lock your design and selections before demo, since change orders are the top cause of delays, as we cover in our kitchen cost guide.

Frequently asked questions

How long will I be without a kitchen? Plan on most of the build phase, roughly 8 to 12 weeks. A temporary kitchen bridges the gap comfortably.

Is the dust really manageable? Yes, with proper containment, air filtration, and daily cleanup. It is never zero, but a careful crew keeps it controlled.

Should we move out instead? Some clients leave for the busiest weeks, especially with young kids. It is a personal call. Most stay the whole time.

Can I keep using water and power? Generally yes, outside of short scheduled shutoffs during plumbing and electrical work, which we coordinate in advance.
